The principle
Postmodern graphic design (1970s–1990s) reacted against Swiss rationality. Designers like Wolfgang Weingart, April Greiman and David Carson layered type and image, broke grids, mixed styles and embraced complexity and irony. They argued that meaning is not fixed — the viewer helps create it.
Objective. Explore layering, complexity and the deliberate breaking of rules.
The brief
Design a poster for a contemporary dance performance using postmodern principles.
Constraints
- Do not reproduce or trace an existing poster — use the principles, not the artefacts
- At least four overlapping layers
- Break at least two of the rules from Chapter 01 on purpose
- Mix at least two contrasting styles
You're done when
- Clearly postmodern principles
- Intentional complexity
- An expressive, original composition
Stretch goal
Create the same poster twice: once Swiss, once postmodern.
