Raw, honest, unpolished.

The principle

Brutalism in graphic and web design borrows its name from raw-concrete architecture. It values honesty over polish: default fonts, visible structure, harsh contrasts, raw materials and a refusal to be pretty. Done thoughtfully, it is a critique of slickness; done carelessly, it is just ugly.

Objective. Use rawness and honesty as a deliberate aesthetic.

The brief

Design a poster for an independent publishing fair using Brutalist principles.

Constraints

  • Do not reproduce or trace an existing poster — use the principles, not the artefacts
  • System or default fonts only
  • Visible structure — borders, rules, raw boxes
  • No gradients, shadows or rounded corners
  • Maximum two colours

You're done when

  • A raw, honest aesthetic
  • Careful decisions within the rawness
  • Clear information

Stretch goal

Design the poster in a plain text editor and screenshot it.
