The principle
The Memphis Group, founded by Ettore Sottsass in Milan in 1980, rejected good taste. Its designers used bold patterns, clashing colours, squiggles, terrazzo and playful geometric forms. Memphis was joyful and irreverent, and it reminds designers that fun is a legitimate design goal.
Objective. Use playfulness and clashing elements with confidence.
The brief
Design a poster for a board game café opening using Memphis principles.
Constraints
- Do not reproduce or trace an existing poster — use the principles, not the artefacts
- Bold patterns and geometric forms
- At least four bright, clashing colours
- Playful but readable type
You're done when
- Clearly Memphis-inspired principles
- A joyful, energetic result
- Readable information
Stretch goal
Design your own Memphis-inspired pattern tile and use it as a background.
