The principle

A silhouette is the simplest possible image: a solid shape against a background. If the silhouette is recognisable, the shape is doing its job. Silhouettes force you to choose the most characteristic angle of a subject — the one that tells you what it is without any interior detail.

Objective. Find the most recognisable silhouette of a subject.

The brief

Design a poster for a jazz club using the silhouette of a musical instrument or musician.

Constraints

  • The main image must be a solid silhouette with no internal detail
  • Maximum two colours
  • Type can interact with the silhouette

You're done when

  • A recognisable silhouette
  • Strong figure–ground contrast
  • Cohesive integration with type

Stretch goal

Create a silhouette that can be read as two different things.
