The principle
A modular grid divides the page into rows as well as columns, producing a field of cells. Elements can occupy one module or span many. Swiss designers used modular grids to bring order to complex information, but the same structure can produce surprising, playful layouts when you decide which modules to fill and which to leave empty.
Objective. Build a composition on a modular grid of rows and columns.
The brief
Design a poster for a design conference using a 6 × 6 modular grid.
Constraints
- A 6 × 6 modular grid with consistent gutters
- Every element must occupy whole modules
- At least three different module spans
- Maximum three colours
You're done when
- A clearly structured modular composition
- Varied spans that create interest
- Empty modules used intentionally
Stretch goal
Break the grid once, deliberately, with a single element. Make the break feel earned.
