The principle
Colour carries associations shaped by culture, memory and context. Red might mean danger, love or celebration depending on where you are and what surrounds it. Designers use these associations deliberately, but the most interesting palettes often go beyond the obvious and find unexpected combinations that still feel right.
Objective. Communicate an emotional tone primarily through colour choices.
The brief
Design a poster for an event titled “QUIET HOURS” — a late-night library opening — where the palette carries the mood.
Required information
- QUIET HOURS
- The library stays open late
- Your own date and location
Constraints
- Colour must carry the emotion — keep shapes and type simple
- Maximum three colours
- Avoid the most obvious colour for the feeling
You're done when
- A clear emotional tone
- A considered, non-obvious palette
- Simple forms that let colour lead
Stretch goal
Make the opposite poster: “LOUD HOURS”, using a palette with the same number of colours.
