The principle
Colours have temperature. Warm colours — reds, oranges, yellows — tend to advance towards the viewer. Cool colours — blues, greens, violets — tend to recede. Painters have used this for centuries to create depth on a flat surface. In design, temperature can create space, separate layers and set an emotional tone.
Objective. Use colour temperature to create depth and spatial layers.
The brief
Design a poster for a mountain cabin weekend using warm and cool colours to create foreground and background.
Constraints
- At least one warm and one cool colour
- Use temperature to create at least two spatial layers
- Simple shapes and typography
- Maximum four colours
You're done when
- Clear spatial depth created through colour
- A coherent palette
- Readable information
Stretch goal
Create depth using only cool colours of different temperatures.
