The principle
Professional art direction begins with a moodboard: a collection of references for colour, type, image and tone. It aligns everyone around a direction before design begins. The skill is not in collecting nice images, but in identifying the thread that connects them and translating it into something original.
Objective. Translate a moodboard into an original visual direction.
The brief
Choose a fictional client and build a moodboard of twelve references. Then design a poster that captures its direction without copying any reference.
Constraints
- Twelve references, labelled with what each contributes
- No reference may be copied directly
- Write one sentence describing the direction
You're done when
- A clear, curated moodboard
- An original poster that captures the direction
- A concise direction statement
Stretch goal
Give your moodboard to a friend, design separately, and compare results.
