The principle
Proximity says “these belong together.” Items placed close to each other are read as a group; items placed apart are read as separate. Organising information into clear groups with consistent spacing reduces the work a reader has to do — they can scan groups before reading lines.
Objective. Organise dense information into clear groups using spacing alone.
The brief
Design a poster for a community workshop day with three sessions, each with a time, title and host.
Invent the workshop day and three sessions. Present all the information clearly.
Constraints
- No lines, boxes or dividers — space only
- One typeface
- Black and white
- At least nine pieces of information
You're done when
- Three distinct groups visible at a glance
- Consistent internal spacing
- No dividers needed to understand the structure
Stretch goal
Define a spacing scale (for example 8, 16, 32, 64) and use only those values.
