The principle
Chance operations, used by artists like John Cage and the Dadaists, introduce randomness into the creative process. Rolling dice or drawing cards to decide colour, position or size removes your habitual choices and forces you to work with what you are given. It is a powerful way to escape your own clichés.
Objective. Use chance to break habitual design decisions.
The brief
Roll dice to decide the colour palette, layout and typeface of a poster for an improvisational theatre show.
Constraints
- Before starting, make a list of six options for colour, layout and typeface
- Roll a die for each decision and accept the result
- You may re-roll only once in total
You're done when
- Decisions clearly made by chance
- A resolved composition despite random constraints
- Suitable for the subject
Stretch goal
Use chance for every single decision, including copy.
