The principle
Whitespace — or negative space — is not wasted space. It frames, separates and gives importance. A small object surrounded by emptiness feels precious; the same object crowded by others feels ordinary. Beginners often fill every gap because empty space looks unfinished. Learning to leave it is a sign of confidence.
Objective. Use generous empty space to create focus, calm, and value.
The brief
Design a poster for a meditation retreat where content occupies no more than a quarter of the canvas.
Constraints
- All text and shapes must fit within 25% of the canvas area
- At least one large uninterrupted empty area
- Maximum two colours
You're done when
- Content stays within a quarter of the canvas
- Empty space feels deliberate and calm
- Information remains easy to find
Stretch goal
Push it further: fit everything into 10% of the canvas without losing legibility.
