The principle

Most readers in left-to-right languages scan in a Z or F pattern. A layout can follow that habit or deliberately redirect it — in a spiral, in a circle, from the bottom up, around the edges. Unconventional reading paths can make a poster memorable, but only if the path is clear enough for the viewer to follow.

Objective. Design a clear but unconventional reading path.

The brief

Design a poster for an experimental music night that must be read in a spiral, circle or bottom-to-top order.

Constraints

  • Text must follow an unusual path
  • The path must be clear without instructions
  • Typography only
  • Maximum two colours

You're done when

  • A clearly unconventional reading order
  • A path that viewers can follow
  • Information that remains accessible

Stretch goal

Design a poster that reads correctly both right-side up and upside down.
