Day 38: Thirds, and Breaking Them
Use a classic rule, then challenge it.

The principle
The rule of thirds divides a canvas into a 3 × 3 grid and suggests placing important elements along those lines or at their intersections. It is a reliable starting point for photography and layout. But rules are tools, not laws. Knowing why the rule works helps you decide when to ignore it.
Objective. Understand a compositional rule well enough to break it deliberately.
The brief
Design two posters for the same gallery opening: one using the rule of thirds, one that deliberately breaks it.
Constraints
- Version one: key elements on thirds lines or intersections
- Version two: avoid the thirds entirely — try the centre or the extreme edges
- Identical content in both
You're done when
- Two clearly different compositional approaches
- Both versions are resolved and intentional
- Thoughtful comparison between them
Stretch goal
Make a third version based on the golden ratio and compare all three.
