The principle
Horizontal and vertical lines feel stable. Diagonals feel dynamic. A strong diagonal creates movement and direction, and it can carry the eye through the composition from one corner to another. Russian Constructivists used diagonals to suggest progress and urgency.
Objective. Use a strong diagonal axis to create movement.
The brief
Design a poster for a marathon using a dominant diagonal that leads the eye across the canvas.
Constraints
- One dominant diagonal axis
- Text can follow or cross the diagonal
- Maximum three colours
You're done when
- A clear, dominant diagonal
- A strong sense of movement
- Legible information
Stretch goal
Use two crossing diagonals to create a sense of collision.
