The principle
A well-designed type family contains a complete range of voices: light and heavy weights, regular and italic, sometimes condensed and extended widths. Limiting yourself to one family forces you to create hierarchy through weight, size, case and spacing instead of switching typefaces whenever you need contrast.
Objective. Create rich typographic contrast using only the weights and styles of one family.
The brief
Design a poster for a jazz festival using one type family in at least three weights or styles.
Constraints
- One type family only
- At least three weights or styles
- Typography only — no images
- Maximum two colours
You're done when
- Only one family used
- Distinct, readable hierarchy
- Weights chosen with purpose, not variety for its own sake
Stretch goal
Use only one weight and create hierarchy with size, case and spacing alone.
